famous pearls

hello
Read about these pearls, their stories, history, prices, characteristics, discoverers, and their adventures through the maze of human existence.

ABERNETHY PEARL--This natural famous pearl was discovered as recently as 1967, when William Abernethy, a Scottish pearl diver, found it in the River Tay. This light pink spherical pearl also endearingly referred to as "Little Willie," weighed 93 grains which is about 2200mm. It was moved to Cairncross Jewelry store in Perth, Scotland, when it was sold for an undisclosed amount.,

HOPE PEARL--This was named for its original owner who also owned the Hope Diamond, Philip (Henry) Hope. This freshwater natural river famous pearl, a pear shaped baroque, is about 2"X4 1/2" weighing 1,800 grains (3-4 ounces) and ranging in color from white to greenish-gold with a fine luster.

Akoya Pearls Pearls from the Akoya oyster are probably the most popular types of pearls, Pinctada fucata martensii, and are sought after for their round shape. Most are cultured with natural colors ranging from light pink, white or yellowish. Japan cultures most akoya pearls over 7mm, while smaller sizes are cultured in China, Korea, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka.

Mabe Pearls After blister pearls are prepared for mounting in jewelry they are called mabe (MAH-bay) pearls. After removing the implant from the shell, the plastic or soapstone is removed and the back filled with a paste or wax, then covered with a mother of pearl backing. When mounted mabe pearls look like solid blister pearls or even half pearls, therefore, the terms are sometimes used interchangeably.

"Mabe" oysters, or Pteria penguin known for their luster, color and iridescence produce mabe pearls which are more valuable than those grown in the silver-lip or black-lip oysters.

Conch Pearls These rare pearls (found in one per 10,000 conchs) can retail for over $500 per carat. Higher quality conch pearls can retail for over $2000 per carat. The great conch (Strombus gigas) found in the Caribbean, is a large marine snail. A porcelain-like surface is caused from a calcareous concretion rather than layers of nacre. Often called "Pink pearls", they can also be brownish or white. Some countries ban the taking of conchs because of depletion while other countries have quotas.

Types of Pearls

hello every body
today we will talk about some type of pearls
Types of pearls fall into two main categories: Freshwater & Saltwater.
or cultivated in salt water oysters in a bay, ocean, gulf, or sea. These also can be irregular in shape, especially when natural, although the best cultured ones are known for their fine round shape.
Each type may be either natural (nature made) or cultured (man induced) and inside each category are different varieties of pearls.
A separate category may also include pearls from snails, as most pearls come from bivalve mussels or oysters (having 2 shells which close together).
I enjoyed learning at the traveling pearl exhibition that any mollusk can grow pearls...pretty exciting
.

South Sea Pearls Usually refers to large white or yellow types of pearls grown by the Pinctada maxima oyster which lives in the South Seas, also called silver-lip or yellow-lip oyster. South Sea Pearls can also mean any saltwater pearl found from the Philippines and Indonesia down to Australia and across to French Polynesia. These pearls often are 9-19mm in size.

Button Pearls Types of pearls which are round in circumference, but flattened somewhat, like a button

Blister Pearls These types of pearl refers to a pearl that has gotten embedded in the mother of pearl shell, so it looks like a "blister." It can be cut out and mounted so the back, which has no nacre, doesn't show. In the 13th century, Chinese were making buddha blister pearls by placing a small, flat, lead buddha inside an oyster and letting the oyster coat it with nacre. The resulting "pearly buddha" was used for good luck. Blister pearls can be cultured in certain shapes such as a heart, square or tear drop by gluing a plastic piece in these shapes against the inside of a shell.
Another name for these solid cultured blister pearls is under the registered trade mark of "Dome'." Tennessee in the USA cultivates these in high quality and a variety of shapes.
After hollow blister pearls are prepared for mounting, they are called Mabe...see below.

Black Pearls Technically used to describe types of pearls from the black-lip (Pinctada margaritifera) oyster in Western to Central pacific Ocean or from La Paz pearl oyster (Pinctada mazatlanica) or rainbow-lipped oyster (Pteria sterna) in the Eastern Pacific between Baja California and Peru. These all produce a natural black pearl. More generally, the term black pearls can also refer to natural black freshwater pearls or pearls dyed black or any dark colored pearl. (Many types of pearls called "black" are really a variety of dark colors).
